The sky was so important for Maya civilization that their whole architecture and art evolved around it.

The temple was designed to keep track of the sun. It has lasted more than three thousand years. The design, shape and orientation relates to the Maya religion. The land was so flat that the only way the Maya could get a clear view of the horizon, was to build tall. In other words; they built their own mountain.
